ECE Leads $7.5 million center on networked systems for rapid situational awareness

UCR has received $7.5 million to create a Department of Defense Center of Excellence that will help develop secure, fully networked command, control, and communications infrastructure that would enable integrated and optimal decision-making. The major research themes include machine learning, communications and networking, and cybersecurity. The center will also create an educational and outreach program targeting underrepresented student groups.

The center will be co-directed by ECE Professor Amit Roy-Chowdhury and CSE Professor Srikanth Krishnamurthy. UC San Diego and the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory are partners on the project. Lead researchers include professors Manu Sridharan (CSE), Nael Abu-Ghazaleh (CSE/ECE), Yingbo Hua (ECE), and Zhiyun Qian (CSE). Other UCR professors involved with the center include Fabio Pasqualetti (ME), K. K. Ramakrishnan (CSE), and Basak Guler (ECE). Portraits are in alphabetical order by last name.

There are only a few DoD Centers of Excellence across the country. The grant is one of the largest federal grants UCR has received. Grants like this allow multiple researchers to work together and achieve goals that a smaller group cannot. See the full story at https://news.ucr.edu/articles/2020/10/02/uc-riverside-receives-75-million-improve-large-scale-networked-systems.
