ECE STEM Summer Camp

STEM-Focused Summer Camp Sparks Engineering Interest for High Schoolers!

ece summer camp
2019 Summer Event organized by ECE faculty and two ECE students, Cody Simons and Cindy Zaragoza. More than 36 high-school students from Redlands USD have participated in the camp

In collaboration with the Redlands Unified School District (Redlands USD), the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC Riverside hosts a week-long STEM-focused summer camp. The camp introduces high-school students to emerging STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields to prepare them for engineering college careers and, ultimately, employment.

The camp introduces students to fundamentals of Electronics and Robotic Systems design. The immersive, custom-designed curriculum includes guided, hands-on lab exercises focused on areas of engineering most in-demand including embedded system design, microcontroller programming, autonomous and manual robot-car navigation and obstacle avoidance, and last, but not least, wireless control of navigation with mobile phones.

Affording students the opportunity to explore STEM is one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching at UCR. Summer camps broaden student knowledge to the far-reaching impacts of engineering while helping students narrow their field of study before they even step foot on a university campus.

Participating students are selected from a pool of applicants by the Redlands USD with additional consideration based on equitable gender distribution and those who receive free-and-reduced lunch. The department is looking to expand the camp and make the opportunity available to more students in the coming years.
