More than two dozen research labs within ECE are engaged in cutting-edge research, and are organized along six broad research areas. As a result of ECE’s diverse real-world applications, the department’s faculty and grad students make up the largest portion of contributors to engineering research centers at the College, offering new and innovative avenues for researchers to explore their areas of interest.
Advanced Nanofabrication and Devices Laboratory
Novel approaches to electronic and optoelectronic materials and device assembly. Addresses challenges in solar power generation, sensing, high gain materials and nanoscale lasers with particular interests in bio-assisted assembly, photoelectrochemical processes and optical cavity design.

Autonomous Systems Perception, Intelligence, & Navigation (ASPIN) Laboratory
Develops theory and technologies for future autonomous systems deployed in unknown or minimally known environments, emphasizing issues of resilient and accurate navigation in GPS-challenged environments and multi-objective autonomous strategies.
Bio-Inspired Science and Nanotechnology Lab
Development of green and sustainable batteries and supercapacitors to power portable electronics and electric vehicles as well as 2D-materials and graphene films for future electronic and spintronic devices.
Center for Ubiquitous Communication by Light (UC-LIGHT)
The UC-Light Center is a University of California systemwide research center consisting of 13 co-PIs from six UC campuses and National Laboratories. The mission of the UC-Light center is to enable wireless communications by embedding signals into the light emitted by LEDs for various applications such as smart illumination, wireless big data streaming, smart traffic control, smart hospitals, light-based navigation and positioning, advertising, and other purposes.

Laboratory for Terascale and Terahertz Electronics (LATTE)
Primary emphasis is on modeling materials and heterolayers of materials at the atomic scale as shown at left and extracting properties and parameters relevant to device performance.

The Nonlinear Computing Lab (NCL) aims to bring novel perspectives and breakthroughs to the research community. Projects at NCL include software-based approaches to reduce data center water footprint, market mechanisms to coordinate power management in multi-tenant data centers, and securing multi-tenant data centers against well-timed power attacks

Real-Time Embedded and Networked systems (RTEN) Lab
Research in the RTEN Lab aims to develop robust, predictable, and reliable real-time embedded and cyber-physical systems. Our research area spans multiple layers of the computing stack, including operating systems, virtualization, multi-core architectures, GPGPUs, and networking. We design, implement, and evaluate new systems mechanisms and analytical methods to serve diverse applications in uncertain environments.
