ONR Supports Project on Biometric Tracking and Behavior Recognition in Camera....

Professor Roy-Chowdhury and Professor BhanuEE faculty Amit K. Roy-Chowdhury and B. Bhanu have received a $3.1 million award from the Office of Naval Research for a project on tracking and activity recognition in camera networks. One thrust of the research will be in developing methods for tracking targets over a large area in a video network using a combination of hard (e.g., face) and soft (e.g., appearance, gait, audio) biometrics. Maintaining the stability of tracks over large swaths of space and time is a very challenging problem that this research will address. The focus areas will be on robust biometric recognition techniques, statistical methods for track fusion, and active camera control for feature acquisition. The tracks will be used to learn and predict the behaviors of people and their social interactions in the camera network, which is another thrust area.

Camera networks is an increasingly important area of research with applications in surveillance and security, environmental monitoring, disaster response, etc. UCR is collaborating with West Virginia High Technology Consortium Foundation (WVHTCF) to provide a demonstration of the developed algorithms in the Videoweb <> facility that we have developed at UCR. It consists of dozens of PTZ network cameras in indoor and outdoor settings, providing a unique testbed for this kind of research.
