Army Research Office funds Professor Daniel Xu's research
Electrical Engineering Associate Professor Zhengyuan (Daniel) Xu has received an Army Research Office (ARO) grant for his 3-year project on wireless optical communications. With recent advances in miniaturized solid-state laser sources and photon detectors, the wireless optical communication technology has become a very competitive solution to short-range low-power data communication applications, and wireless sensor networks. It is not only suitable for Army’s secure and jamming-resistant communications, but also commercially attractive at potentially high data rates. However, medium impairments to transmitted optical signals via diffusion, atmospheric attenuation and scattering have posed considerable limitations to system performance and achievable data rate. Together with his recently received Department of Defense (DOD) grant funded by the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP), this ARO grant will help Professor Xu to initiate the state-of-the-art non-line of sight wireless optical communications study, including test-bed setup, field measurements, system characterization in various indoor and outdoor communication environments, as well as system design tradeoffs. Effective solutions to mitigate channel adverse effects will enable promising deployment of this technology in the near future.
