Four EE professors help to bring SUNRISE to UCR campus
Four EE professors, who are specializing in the area of Nano Materials, Devices and Circuits (NMDC), helped to bring the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site to UCR. EE professors Alexander Balandin, Roger Lake, Jianlin Liu and Mihri Ozkan (left) participated in the proposal, which led to the creation of the NSF Nanomaterials and Devices REU site at UCR. The REU site will offer $300,000 in support for the undergraduate student research projects. Most of the projects will be carried out during summer months under the framework of the Summer Undergraduate Nanoscale Research Institute for Science and Engineering (SUNRISE) created with BCOE help. The SUNRISE will be run by Dr. Christian Foster, Director of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program together with Professor Alexander Balandin, REU Site PI and Neuroscience Professor Vladimir Parpura, REU Site co-PI. Chemical and Environmental Engineering Professor Robert Haddon and several other BCOE professors are also part of the interdisciplinary SUNRISE team.

EE-related research topics to be offered to the undergraduate students in SUNRISE include Formation of 3-D Hierarchical Structures (M. Ozkan); ZnO/ZnMgO Hetero-junction Field-Effect Transistors (J.L. Liu); Nanoelectronic Materials and Devices Modeling (R. Lake); Phonon Engineering at Nanoscale (A. Balandin); and Performance Enhancement of GaN-Based Transistors (A. Balandin). Applications for the SUNRISE programs are due by March 31. Selected students will work at UCR from June 19 through August 25, 2006. UCR will provide each participating student housing at the university's International Village apartments, a food allowance and a stipend. For students from outside the Southern California region, funds are available to offset travel costs. More information about SUNRISE can be found at the NSF REU web-site.
