Abstract:

Cooperative multi-point (CoMP) transmission is being viewed as a key enabler of some performance requirements set forth by IMT Advanced. Cooperative transmission techniques under consideration range from non-coherent single-user multi-point transmission (soft handoff) to spatially coordinated scheduling across cells equipped with multiple antennas and further towards joint coherent multi-cell multi-user transmissions. This talk provides an overview of CoMP techniques and highlights of performance gains that can be expected in different deployment scenarios. We further point out some key challenges in achieving efficient distributed inter-cell coordination and discuss possible solutions to address these challenges.

 

About the Speaker:

Alexei Gorokhov received his PHD in electrical engineering from Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications (Telecom Paris) in 1997. From 1997 till 2000 he was with French National Research Center (CNRS). From 2000 to 2003 he was with Philips Research Labs focusing on MIMO WLAN systems design and performance analysis. During the same period, he was visiting scientist in Information Systems Laboratory at Stanford University. He joined Qualcomm Inc in fall 2003 where he is currently Principal Engineer with Corporate R&D. His focus at Qualcomm is in design, evaluation and implementation of cellular broadband systems. Most recently, he has been leading systems effort for OFDMA based air interface that gave rise to a 3GPP2 standard known as Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB).
