Image Analysis meets Art History

Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, Dr. Amit K. Roy-Chowdhury is part of a team, led by Dr. Conrad Rudolph and including Dr. Jeanette Kohl (both from the Department of Art History), which has received an initial grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for studying the application of facial recognition techniques in identifying unknown subjects in centuries-old sculptures and portraits. It is a very novel application of image-based facial recognition techniques (probably the first such application). It also promises to be an interesting problem from the aspect of the computational sciences since a portrait image may not have a photographic likeness but rather bear the stamp of the artist’s interpretation of the subject.
