BIOGRAPHY

Professor Ping Liang led the establishment of the Ph.D. program and development of Senior Design Projects in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His current interests are in advanced research and commercialization of technologies.

RF DSP Inc.: Professors Ping Liang founded RF DSP Inc. to develop 5G and next generation wireless technologies, focusing on massive MIMO and open radio access network technologies. He invented technologies critical for 5G and beyond, including cell-free networking, full-duplex integrated access and backhaul, intelligent over-the-air wireless channels.

Cellular Nanomed Inc.: Professors Ping Liang and Sakhrat Khizroev co-founded Cellular Nanomed Inc. and were awarded a multi-million dollar research contract from the prestigious advanced research funding agency DARPA to use the technology pioneered by them to develop Next-Generation Non-Surgical Neurotechnology (N3) for Brain-Computer Interface. He is an inventor of technologies for drug-free targeted cancer treatment using cell-scale localized pulsed electric field, true wireless electrode for brain stimulation, and on-demand targeted intra-cellular drug delivery.

TransDimension Inc.: Previously, Prof. Liang was founder and CEO of TransDimension Inc., which he founded with more than a million dollar research funding from the prestigious federal advanced research funding agency DARPA. He later transformed the company into a fabless semiconductor and embedded software company. He led the research and development of multiple ASIC chips, semiconductor IP cores and embedded software products that were used by many fortune 100 companies worldwide in billions of product units ranging from cell phones, digital cameras, printers, PDAs, MP3 players, storage drives, to network gateways and routers, adapters and set-top boxes. Based on his technology leadership and vision, TransDimension grew into a leader in its market space, was ranked top ten of the fastest growing technology company in Orange County, California for three years and was ranked the 32nd fastest growing technology company in North America in 2005. The company was acquired in the same year.

Based on the significant impact of his technology creativity and inventions, he was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in Dec. 2013 and a Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering.

Dr. Liang received his Bachelor degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1982, the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1983 and 1987 respectively.

His research in industry led to over 80 granted US and international patents and a large number of pending patents. In addition to his inventions at Cellular Nanomed Inc. and RF DSP Inc., his earlier inventions provided enabling technologies to the USB 2.0 On-the-Go industry standard, the PictBridge industry standard and the Bluetooth 4.0 High Speed standard. In 2000, he and his collaborator recognized the need and importance of co-existence, coordination and top-level control among multiple wireless protocols, e.g., the Bluetooth and 802.11 Wifi protocols, to achieve higher data throughputs. They proposed and developed technology for co-existence, coordination and top-level control among multiple wireless protocols and filed multiple patents in 2001, which were granted between 2005 and 2007. Co-existence, coordination and top-level control among multiple wireless protocols are at the foundation of single-chip Wifi and Bluetooth solutions used in smartphones and tablets, and in the Bluetooth 4.0 High Speed industry standard released in June 2010, nearly 10 years after he first developed the technology. His patents also include technologies critical in 5G and 6G networks for massive MIMO, beamforming, and active intelligent wireless channels that bring artificial intelligence and learning to the physical layer and over the air channels.

His collaboration with Prof. Sakhrat Khizroev at University of Miami on magneto-electric nanoparticles for nano-medicine applications has led to multiple breakthroughs in externally controlled targeted drug delivery and wireless deep brain stimulation and readout. They were the first to develop a method for external AC magnetic field-triggered release of medicine using magneto-electric nanoparticles as carriers after they have crossed the blood-brain barrier, and a method for external magnetic field controlled nano-electroporation to allow drug-carrying magneto-electric nanoparticles to penetrate the membrane of targeted cancer cells and consequently triggering the release of drugs inside cancer cells to increase high-specificity drug uptake and eradication of cancer cells. These results are published in Nature Communications on anti-HIV drug in the brain, Nature: Scientific Reports on ovarian cancer, Nature: Scientific Reports on animal studies, and Nanomedicine on wireless deep brain stimulation and readout (which was ranked in the Top 100 Stories of 2015 in the Discovery Magazine). His collaboration with Prof. Yingbo Hua at UCR on full duplex radios produced new understandings and excellent results of self-interference cancelation.
