ECE PhD graduate to join UT Arlington as Assistant Professor

Riverside, Ca –

Mohammad A. Islam, a Ph.D. student advised by Dr. Shaolei Ren in the ECE Department, will join the University of Texas, Arlington as an Assistant Professor. Mohammad’s Ph.D. dissertation falls in the general areas of cyber-physical systems, computer architecture and security, with a focus on data center security and efficiency. Data centers have emerged as a prime target for malicious attacks due to the criticality of the services hosted in them. While securing data centers in the cyberspace has been widely recognized, a complementary and equally important security aspect --- data center physical infrastructure security --- has remained largely unchecked and surfaced to threaten the data center uptime. In his research, Mohammad makes novel and significant contributions to data center security by enhancing its physical infrastructure security, with a special focus on mitigating the emerging threat of “power attacks”. His work on data center security has been published in very competitive and prestigious venues like ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CCS) and ACM International Conference on Measurement and Modeling of Computer Systems (SIGMETRICS). In addition, he has done fist-of-its-kind work on improving multi-tenant colocation data center efficiency and resilience, resulting in multiple papers in the prestigious architecture conference of IEEE International Symposium on High-Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA).

In January, 2019, Mohammad will join the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. He is striving to make our digital IT world more secure and efficient. Meanwhile, he is also leveraging advanced computation technologies to make cyber-physical systems more secure and efficient.
