Professor Balandin Named Fellow of SPIE

Balandin-SPIE-SmallAlexander Balandin, professor of electrical engineering and chair of the materials science and engineering (MS&E) program has been named a Fellow of SPIE. The SPIE Board of Directors informed him about his election last week. SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering is an international society for the exchange, collection and dissemination of knowledge in optics, photonics, and imaging engineering. Balandin was recognized for distinguished contributions to investigation of "optical and phonon properties of semiconductor nanostructures and graphene." SPIE Fellows are “Members of distinction who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging.” Balandin will receive the award certificate at the SPIE Smart Structures and Materials conference, scheduled for March, 2011 in San Diego, California.

Balandin’s research contributions, which led to his election, include investigation of quantum dot superlattices and their applications in photovoltaic solar cells, theoretical study of optical phonon in wurtzite semiconductor nanostructures, and experimental and theoretical investigation of graphene properties and its device applications.

On July 1, 1955 SPIE was founded as the Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers in California. In 1964 the Society formally changed its name to the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, and in 1981, to reflect a changing membership, the Society became SPIE—The International Society for Optical Engineering.
