Ph.D. Students Kimia Shamaei and Joe Khalife and Prof. Zak Kassas receive best paper presentation award in ION GNSS+ 2016

October 6, 2016

Ph.D. students Kimia Shamaei and Joe Khalife and their Ph.D. advisor Prof. Zak Kassas received the best paper presentation award in the “Complementary Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT)" Session at the 2016 Institute of Navigation Global Navigation Satellite System Conference (ION GNSS+) for their paper entitled "Performance Characterization of Positioning in LTE Systems." The paper presented low-level models of received cellular LTE signals along with an architecture for a software-defined radio (SDR) that is capable of (1) extracting essential parameters for navigation from received LTE signals and (2) acquiring and tracking real LTE signals transmitted from multiple base stations. The paper also presented a method for obtaining time-of-arrival (TOA) estimates that is highly robust against interference and noise in the environment, resulting in an unprecedented level of accuracy for navigation with cellular LTE signals. Experimental results utilizing the proposed SDR and associated signal models and algorithms demonstrated a mean distance difference of 11.96m between the LTE and GPS navigation solutions over a 1.42Km ground vehicle trajectory. The presentation presented the first experimental demonstration of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) navigating exclusively with LTE signals.
