The cover article of the March issue of GPS World magazine features Professor Zak Kassas’ research in navigation with signals of opportunity. In the article entitled “Opportunity for Accuracy,” Kassas and his Ph.D. students Joshua Morales and Joe Khalife demonstrate how they exploit ambient cellular signals in an environment to yield a significant improvement in localization accuracy.

 

Position solutions produced by traditional GPS receivers typically suffer from high vertical error due to lack of satellite vehicle angle diversity. To fill this gap, Kassas’ ASPIN research laboratory designed specialized software-defined radio (SDR) capable of exploiting ambient cellular signals in the environment, which are not intended for navigation. The SDR fuses cellular signals and GPS signals, reducing the uncertainty in the vertical localization (measured by the vertical dilution of precision) by 64 percent. These results will be particularly useful for future unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
